Other snake movement methods work great on flat, horizontal surfaces, the concertina Straightens itself out, and pulls its back end along. Next, the snake lowers the front part of its body to the ground, Its head forward, twisting and extending the front part of its body upwards and Snake moving in this way braces the back end of its body, and then it pushes Is because the snake contracts and expands its body similar to an accordion. Concertina MethodĬoncertina technique is often thought of as an “accordion” kind of motion. Of all forms of snake movement, the serpentine movement allows the snake to move extremely fast. Most land and water snakes move in this way. This is the most common form of snake movement. The snake pushes against the irregularities with its scales and thrusts itself forward in a curving shape. This can be any bump on an object, such as a tree or a rock, or a dent in the ground.Īs such, the serpentine method is not effective for moving over smooth surfaces, such as glass, but it works very well on a rough forest floor. Snakes moving in this way will push off of surfaces to get themselves moving. This kind of motion is also called lateral undulation, or sometimes undulatory locomotion. The snake appears to form the shape of the letter S on the ground as it travels. When you imagine a snake, you likely envision an animal moving in a wavy motion. Let’s take a look at the different patterns. However, there are actually 4 main types of snake movement. It’s the pattern that we think of when we use the word “snaking”. In animated movies, they always seem to use the same twisting, waving motion. It’s easy to assume that all snakes move in the same way. Where the unconscious snakes fell off, the conscious snakes were able to double their friction coefficient and hold on. They compared the ability of conscious and unconscious snakes to remain balanced on a flexible pillar. Precise FrictionĪccording to Arizona State University, snakes can shift their belly scales to actively alter how much friction they have with a surface. They may not have hands, but these snakes can hold on tight. The snake’s scales give them the ability to grip onto a textured vertical surface. Snakes can move on all kinds of surfaces, apparently defying gravity as they climb up walls. ScalesĪnother factor in snake movement is their belly scales. Each rib is connected to strong muscles that the snake can use to push itself along. Depending on the type of snake, their long spine can have hundreds of ribs attached to it. The body parts that they use are as follows: Ribs and Muscles Given that snakes don’t have any legs, they need to use other parts of their body to move about in the wild. ![]() Ready for Part 2.6 What We Can Learn from How Snakes Move? Science Behind Snake Movement Some of the best acting I have seen in a long time. Strother Martin is brilliant in this show playing the crazed Ben Snow that wants nothing but to see Sam Bristol. So the first episode ends with the two heading to Ten Strike. Festus is forced to carry water like an pack mule while the delusional Ben Snow holds him at gunpoint. Ben also wants to find a formal rival of his named Sam Bristol in the town of Ten Strike so that he can show Sam that he is now rich. Ben carries on conversations with snakes and keeps talking about this town named Ten Strike that is full of people and pretty girls. During his recovery, Festus sees sign that Ben has some serious psychotic behavior issues. Ben takes Festus back to his area where water is found and helps him get back to health. During the this time Ben found a large amount of gold and has been wanting to find a way out of the desert for a long time. After six days the storm passed and Ben found himself all alone. Ben and a friend was looking for gold and they got caught up in a sandstorm. Oh, not by his choice but by a bad situation. Ben Snow has been in the desert for a very long time. However, Festus is found by a man named Ben Snow (Strother Martin). When Festus is ambushed by the convict, Festus lays in the arid desert with no hope of survival. In this first part episode, Festus is on the path of an escaped convict named Gard Dixon in the arid desert outside of Cottonwood. The fine acting and the way each line is delivered by the actors makes the viewer believe that they are right in the middle of the story with a unique realism not experienced many times. I have to say that this entire episode (part 1 and 2) is perhaps the best show in the entire collection of 'Gunsmoke'.
